Presentation of good practice

Based on our previous experiences, we have come to the conclusion that teenagers are not really able to systematize their opinions coherently and communicate effectively with appropriate arguments. To remedy this problem, we are launching our event series, the aim of which is for students to develop their reasoning techniques to a professional level through playful contests. The target group is high school students in Szeged-Csongrád county.

Over the past year, we have visited high schools in Szeged countless times during our programs. Based on our experiences, we have come to the conclusion that teenagers are not really able to systematize their opinions coherently and communicate effectively with appropriate arguments. To remedy this problem, we are launching our event series called Beleszól6sz!, the aim of which is for students to develop their reasoning techniques to a professional level through playful contests. During the preparations, we will prepare a publication introducing the program in May and, with this in hand, we will start promoting the event series among the teachers in four of the high schools in Szeged that we regularly visit – Dénes Gábor, Krúdy, Csonka, Hansági, helping to arouse the interest of the students. We will develop the implementation during July. In August, we will perfect the practical implementation through trial games at SZIN. During September, with the help of teachers, we will start recruiting student teams and preparing the participating students and their teachers for the competitions. We will also launch the program’s website, Facebook page and Facebook group. We will also acquire the necessary image elements (lectern, roll up ) to be able to hold the competitions in demanding conditions. We will also involve the program’s main patron and jury, who will be selected from among the illustrious and recognized people of Szeged, thus promoting the interest of the media, the press and the public. The event series itself consists of two parts. In the first phase, during October and November, we will hold qualifiers in the relevant high schools. Four teams from each school will compete against each other in a full-day competition. The winners of the qualifiers in each school will advance to the city final, which will be held in December at the Youth House in Szeged. We reward the participation of all students with gifts, thereby increasing their willingness to participate. The winners of the school qualifiers – in addition to being able to represent their school in the city final – receive valuable gifts, as do the winners of the various positions in the city final, among whom the members of the winning team, in addition to the valuable gift they win for themselves, also win a serious prize for their class. The final winning team also receives a large cup, which they can keep in their school as a traveling trophy until the next year’s competition series, as we are launching the program series with the aim of creating a tradition. After the end of the program, we produce a publication presenting the events and results of the program. The rounds of the event series are documented with the assistance of a professional photographer, and in the case of the final, a professional cameraman, and we also entrust the graphic work and image design to a competent professional. For the successful organization, implementation and evaluation, we intend to employ four people under a contract for the duration of the program, who we intend to supplement with at least four volunteers during the competitions.

Good practice builds on further opportunities, exploring and introducing young people to an area that is important but not yet available for sufficient time. For example, introducing a game show that is already well-known and popular abroad.

It is essential that students who are slowly entering adulthood are able to effectively express their opinions on any issue, which unfortunately often does not have the opportunity to practice within the school framework. Although the introduction and development of the culture of debate was included in the curriculum in 2013, due to the increased curriculum and expectations, teachers admit that they do not have time to try out the various methodological tasks in practice, so it is just one theoretical material among many. However, in today’s world, this would be an essential skill for students to successfully participate in the labor market.

The good practice achieved its goal, as the traveling cup will continue to revive the competition among local schools in the coming years, popularizing the topic and method.

Adaptability

It is necessary to set up a 3-person and a 5-person professional jury. A hall/room to host the events. Providing medals and certificates, as well as material prizes for the winning teams. Recording equipment for recording the events (camera, tripod, microphones, etc.).
